Participating in the 5th Smart City Workshop for Students - Drawing together with the next generation to create a smart city for Yokohama with logistics as its starting point -
January 16, 2026
We recently participated as a guest speaker in the 5th Smart City Workshop for Students, hosted by the Future Innovation Yokohama Institute.
The Yokohama Future Organization (URL: https://yoxo-o.jp/) is an "institution for promoting innovation creation" that supports players who take on new challenges through collaboration between industry, academia, and the public and private sectors, while collaborating with people active in Yokohama and those from Japan and overseas.
In April 2023, we became the first international logistics company to join the Yokohama Future Institute as a full member, and through various activities we are working to create innovation through industry-academia-government-citizen collaboration.
The "Smart City Workshop for Students" is a program in which university students in Yokohama and companies work together to co-create the "Smart City Yokohama of the Future." This time, our employees took to the stage as lecturers on the theme of "Challenges and Future Visions of International Logistics for Realizing a Smart City," and engaged in in-depth discussions with the students, who will be the leaders of the next generation, about the state of logistics infrastructure, which is at the core of urban functions.
The lecture was divided into two parts, with the first half explaining the current situation at Yokohama Port, which boasts the second-highest container handling volume in Japan and the highest number of ocean-going vessels calling at the port, and how our company is building optimal transport routes as a "logistics designer (forwarder)." Furthermore, from the perspective that "logistics is the lifeblood of a city," we presented four challenges for realizing a smart city: "Supply Chain efficiency," "decarbonization," "resilience," and "automation and employment," and introduced our efforts, including our DX service "Forward ONE" and our environmentally friendly returnable logistics container solution "HACO Lab."
In the second half of the group work session, the participants discussed the four themes presented to them with the students. Many flexible ideas unique to the next generation were presented, such as "building a cross-industry logistics system in preparation for disasters" and "adopting green energy from a broad perspective in the port sector," which envisioned a future for the Smart City of Yokohama, providing a lively exchange of opinions.
Through activities to increase the number of next-generation human resources interested in international logistics, we will contribute to raising the level of logistics operations in Japan, a trading nation. We will also continue to promote co-creation between industry, academia, government and citizens through our activities at the Future Innovation Yokohama Foundation, thereby contributing to solving social issues through logistics and developing an innovation ecosystem.
