Conducted demonstration experiment on real-time location information service for returnable logistics containers using IoT communication technology

January 11, 2022

Nissin Corporation, Ltd. (Headquarters: Naka-ku, Yokohama, hereinafter referred to as Nissin) is participating in a demonstration experiment regarding a real-time location information service for logistics containers between Japan and Indonesia using low-power consumption IoT devices and a cloud platform. I did.
Nissin operates HACO lab. Lab., a package that includes the development, operation, and system management of international returnable containers, and is working to visualize global Supply Chain and reduce logistics costs for customers through logistics containers. I'm here.

In this demonstration experiment, IoT equipment provided by Kyocera Communication Systems Co., Ltd. (headquartered in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto City, hereinafter referred to as KCCS) was incorporated into returnable containers manufactured by Shinwa Package Co., Ltd. (headquartered in Higashinada-ku, Kobe City). By transporting goods to and from Indonesia Ocean transport, we verified the possibility of a new international logistics service.
This demonstration was conducted as part of the ``Feasibility Study on Establishing a Location-Based Service Infrastructure to Contribute to Alleviating International Logistics and Traffic Congestion,'' which was selected as a ``Overseas Supply Chain Diversification Support Project'' solicited by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). , which participated in a demonstration experiment conducted mainly by Kyocera Communication Systems.

About the demonstration experiment

(1) Period

August 18th - November 19th, 2021

(2) Route

International round trip transportation between Chiba, Japan and Jakarta, Indonesia

(3) Participating companies
  • Kyocera Communication Systems Co., Ltd. (Provision of IoT equipment, communication base station equipment, and location management services)

  • Shinwa Package Co., Ltd. (manufacturer and Shipper of returnable containers)

  • PT Affinity Indonesia (Consignee)

  • Nissin Corporation (logistics arrangement) / Nissin 's two Indonesian subsidiaries *1

(4) Overview
  • Shinwa Package Co., Ltd. will be Shipper and PT Shinwa Indonesia will be Consignee, providing Intermodal transportation between bases in Japan and Indonesia.

  • On the outbound trip, the cargo was loaded into returnable containers and transported by FCL (20' container), and on the return trip, the empty containers were returned using Consolidated Sea Consolidation (LCL).

  • By capturing the location information of returnable containers using the Sigfox communication network *2 provided by KCCS and linking it to the IoT location management service "IoT Tracker" *3, the location and movement history of returnable containers can be seamlessly visualized internationally. I verified it.

  • Utilizing the geofence function *4 of IoT Tracker, we confirmed whether event information regarding loading and Carrying out at each designated location could be grasped in a timely manner.

  • We also used a button attached to the IoT device to send an email notification to the relevant parties when the returnable container was empty at the delivery destination.

Experimental results and effects

This time, communication conditions were generally good in each country, and we were able to use the geofence function *4 to confirm that the logistics containers equipped with IoT devices had arrived at each location. Being able to detect the movement of logistics containers during international transportation allows us to accurately grasp the usage status of equipment, which could potentially be used to detect accidents such as cargo stagnation or loss.

In the verification performed to notify the empty status of the distribution container (event processing by pressing a button), we were able to confirm that the notification event was received. In the future, it is thought that by linking with a distribution container management system, it will be possible to efficiently utilize information on the availability of distribution containers.

In the future, "smart returnables" will be equipped with sensor functions that can detect transport conditions (temperature, humidity, impact) in addition to location information, allowing for transport of cargo that requires strict transport management, such as pharmaceuticals and precision equipment. We will continue to develop services for containers.

  • There are two companies: PT. NISSIN TRANSPORT INDONESIA whose main business is forwarding, and PT.NISSIN JAYA INDONESIA whose main business is warehousing and domestic transportation.

  • A Low Power Wide Area-network communication network provided by France's Sigfox. It is a communication technology that has the characteristics of ``power-saving and long-distance wireless communication,'' and is operated by one carrier per country, with KCCS being the telecommunications carrier in Japan.

  • "IoT Tracker" A service that visualizes location information sent from Sigfox-compatible IoT devices on a MAP and manages assets.

  • By using GPS location information to set an arbitrary area surrounded by virtual boundaries, it records and notifies you when equipment enters or exits a specific area.
