Joint demonstration experiment transportation by three companies Conducted international transportation experiment that visualized transportation status by combining ultra-low temperature refrigerated containers and IoT

December 29, 2021

Nissin Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Yokohama City, hereinafter referred to as “Nissin”) is collaborating with Suzuken Group (Headquarters: Higashi-ku, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, hereinafter referred to as “Suzuken”) to utilize Panasonic’s vacuum insulated cold storage box “VIXELL” *1. We conducted a transportation experiment assuming the international transportation of pharmaceuticals, which requires high quality transportation.

background

The need for international transportation of pharmaceuticals is increasing, as exemplified by the transportation of vaccines due to the coronavirus pandemic. With the introduction of GDP in pharmaceutical transportation, strict temperature control is now required, and there is a need for high-quality ultra-low-temperature transportation as well as a visualization service for transportation conditions.
This time, each company has brought together their expertise in the field of international and domestic transportation, and with the cooperation of Panasonic, we have developed a new product that enables long-term cold storage with a highly insulated structure for international pharmaceutical transportation, which is expected to be a growing need in the future. We conducted a transportation experiment combining "VIXELL" with IoT devices that Nissin is considering introducing.

Experiment details

① Implementation period

September 14th - September 22nd, 2021

②Equipment used

Panasonic "VIXELL" 1 L size, 1 S size (2 total)
Using IoT equipment gateway and sensor tags

③Transportation section

From Basel, Switzerland to Suzuken Hanshin Logistics Center (Kita Ward, Kobe City)

④Setting conditions

Set the temperature inside the “VIXELL” container to below -60 degrees using dry ice
Insert a SIM that allows international roaming into the main device, install a sensor tag in the external pocket of "VIXELL", and take measurements when passing a measurement point

⑤Verification details

A...“VIXELL” temperature maintenance ability test
B... Verification of IoT communication and tag sensor functions overseas and domestically (temperature, humidity, illuminance, tilt, shock intensity, and remaining charge)
C...Issues and problems regarding permissions and Customs clearance in international Intermodal transportation

⑥Others

From September 23rd to October 4th, VIXELL was stored at the Nissin Kyoto Office (Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto Prefecture) and measurements continued as an experiment to test the heat retention function of VIXELL.

inspection result

A. Temperature retention time at minus 60℃

It was confirmed that the L size can maintain temperatures of -60℃ for 19 days + 3 hours, and the S size can maintain temperatures of -60℃ for 9 days + 12 hours. *2

B. Obtain IoT communication data at measurement points in each of the three countries

The data measured by the sensor tags is stored in the cloud via communication networks from each point in Switzerland, Belgium *3, and Japan, and the sensor information (temperature, humidity, illuminance, tilt, degree of impact, and remaining charge) is collected before arriving at the Suzuken Hanshin Logistics Center. amount) on the Internet management screen.

C. Declaring “VIXELL” to customs as a “returnable container”

I consulted the customs office in advance, declared "VIXELL" as a "returnable container," and was able to obtain a duty-free import permition.

Future actions

The results of this demonstration transportation will be made public on Panasonic's "VIXELL" website, and the three companies will utilize the knowledge and know-how gained through the demonstration experiment to work towards realizing international logistics that meets the needs of the pharmaceutical industry. . (HP is scheduled to be released in early January 2022)

(footnote)

  • "VIXELL" developed by Panasonic is an ultra-low temperature cold storage container that uses vacuum insulated housing (VIC) technology, and can be stored and transported at -70 degrees Celsius for up to 18 days. This equipment has a proven track record for transporting vaccines within Japan.

  • The temperature logger for temperature measurement was selected from equipment that can be mounted on airline aircraft.

  • NISSIN BELGIUM NV, Nissin subsidiary, obtained GDP (Good Distribution Practice) certification in February 2021.
